The SocietyDesign Studies Forum is a College Art Association Affiliated Society. Founded as Design Forum in 1983 and renamed in 2004, Design Studies Forum seeks to nurture and encourage the study of design history, criticism, and theory and to foster better communication among the academic and design communities. The Forum’s 400+ members include practicing designers, design historians, critics, and museum professionals.MembershipMembership in Design Studies Forum is free. DESIGN ORGANIZATIONSAIGA “The professional association for design” The AIGA offers professional resources in practice management, a business newsletter and professional practices. They also offer educational resources in design guidebooks, bibliographies, design programs and scholarships. They “exchange ideas and information, participate in critical analysis and research and advance education and ethical practice.” Architecture and Design Society of the Art Institute Chicago “In addition to architecture, the Society now represents related design areas such as interior design, graphic design, industrial design, and product design. It prides itself on making the art of architecture accessible to a wide audience. It also seeks to conserve our architectural heritage through its permanent collection currently containing over 120,000 plans, drawings, models, and architectural artifacts.” News and events will be listed soon. The Art Directors Club The ADC is the premier organization for integrated media and the first international creative collective of its kind. The ADC celebrates and inspires creative excellence, connecting creative visual communications professionals from around the world. Australian Graphic Design Association Founded in 1988 to facilitate the advancement of the graphic design profession in Australia. The website offers, news, events and job postings in Australia as well as access to its online journal, visual:design:scholarship. The Bureau of European Design Associations exists to ensure a permanent liaison between the professional societies of designers, the promotional, educational, research, social and design management organizations and networks within the countries of Europe and to act as a liaison between them and the authorities of the European Union. College Art Association “Promotes excellence in scholarship and teaching in the history and criticism of the visual arts and in creativity and technical skill in the teaching and practices of art.” Offers job postings, fellowships, conferences, and membership including the benefit of Art Journal and Art Bulletin. The Costume Society The Society promotes every aspect of the study of clothing and textiles with an annual symposium, publishing the journal Costume and newsletters and information about awards, news and events. Decorative Arts Society In its activities and publications the Society embraces all the different media: furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, textiles, jewelery and fashion as well as industrial design, stage and film design and the graphic arts throughout Europe and America from 1850 to the present. The Society contributes a journal and news and events. The Design and Emotion Society “The Design & Emotion society was established in 1999 as an international network of researchers, designers and companies sharing an interest in experience driven design.” It offers information about upcoming conferences, events, literary documents and student showcases. The Design Exchange DX promotes Canadian design by delivering exhibit tours, workshops, competitions and outreach programs to support the primary and secondary school curriculum in the area of design and technology. It delivers career development workshops, design competitions, and design management courses to university and college students and post graduate design management training to business and design professionals. Design History Society The Design History Society works nationally and internationally to promote and support the study and understanding of design history. Its activities are focused on consolidating the teaching of the subject in universities and colleges, and demonstrating the widespread cultural and economic significance of design history. The Design History Workshop Japan An organization for researchers in design history who are based in Japan, or research Japanese-design related topics. The organization's activities include tri-annual research presentations, an annual symposium, and the annual publication of the bilingual Japanese-English journal Design History. Design Society The Design Society is interested in the promotion of cooperation between researchers, professionals and instructors, the active support of research, practice, management, and continued education in development and design. The website lists upcoming events and special interest groups. Design Research Society “The Design Research Society is the multi-disciplinary learned society for the design research community worldwide. DRS was founded in 1966, and since then has established a record of significant achievements in contributing to design knowledge. The European Council of Interior Architects A representative body for the European professional organizations in interior architecture and design, providing a common platform for the exchange of information on professional practices and establishing common minimum standards of educational and professional profiles for the Associated Interior Architects in the member organizations. International Association of Societies of Design Research The purpose of the Association is to promote research or study into or about the activity of design in all its many fields of application, through encouraging collaboration on an international level between independent societies of design research, the website offers information about conferences and news. The International Council of Graphic Design Associations A voluntary assembly of associations concerned with graphic design, visual communication, design management, design promotion and design education. The webpage offers links to other design organizations, design archives, collections and libraries, exhibitions, design magazines, publishers, design schools and other helpful design links. International Council of Societies of Industrial Design The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) is a global not-for-profit organization that promotes better design around the world. Today, Icsid counts over 150 members in more than 50 countries, representing an estimated 150 000 designers. Icsid members are professional associations, promotional societies, educational institutions, government bodies, corporations and institutions, which aim to contribute to the development of the profession of industrial design. The International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers The IFI was Founded in Denmark in 1963 to unite and provide discussion of interior design issues within a handful of European countries. The IFI collectively represents over 25,000 practicing Interior Designers worldwide, including 52 member associations, institutions, and schools in 45 countries on every continent. International Society of Typographic Designers The ISTD is run by and for typographers, graphic designers and educators. The society offers information about events, publications and awards. Industrial Designers Society of America The Industrial Designers Society of America seeks to “Inspire design quality and responsibility through professional development and education. Elevate the business of design and improve our industry's value.” The webpage offers design news, awards and events, and resources for designers, scholars, educators and students. Japan Society for the Science of Design Contributes to the development of scientific research on Design with cooperation of its members, offering special interest groups, awards, publications and news. Korean Society for Design Science Promotes design science fields in Korean society by supporting theoretical study activities and practical research inquiries in general design fields and contributes to the overall design society by supporting an information exchange program with members and international organizations. Nordic Forum for Design History An interdisciplinary design research network for topics related to the history of design in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Activities include the publication of Scandinavian Journal of Design History. The Society of Architectural Historians “An international not-for-profit membership organization that promotes the study and preservation of the built environment worldwide.” The SAH webpage offers resources for employers, job seekers, grants and fellowships, an image exchange, publications and student resources. The Society for Environmental Graphic Design An international non-profit educational organization providing resources for design specialists in the field of environmental graphic design, architecture, and landscape, interior, and industrial design. SEGD members are leading designers of directional and attraction sign systems, destination graphics, identity programs, exhibits, and themed environments. The Society for the History of Technology The Society for the History of Technology “is dedicated to the historical study of technology and its relations with politics, economics, labor, business, the environment, public policy, science, and the arts. ” This webpage offers awards, prizes and grants, news and announcements, publications, special interest groups, as well as graduate programs. The Society of Publication Designers For over 40 years, the Society of Publication Designers has been a driving force for quality and innovation in publication design. The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) An international not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, study, and support of type, its history and development, its use in the world of print and digital imagery, its designers, and its admirers. The Type Directors Club The objectives of the TDC are to raise the standards of typography and related fields of the graphic arts, and to provide inspiration, simulate research, further education, and disseminate information relating to the typographic arts. The Vernacular Architecture Forum The Vernacular Architecture Forum's commitment to promoting the broad and multidisciplinary study of the history of North American architecture, landscape and material culture manifests itself in a number of activities engaging the VAF board and membership. The organization provides a syllabus exchange, news, awards and fellowships, a bibliography resource, as well as the publication of its journal Buildings and Landscapes: Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum.
